Oceanology International Americas: Delivering the future today

San Diego, CA- 15/02/2023: Following a successful first day,Oceanology International Americas (OiA) expo and conference shifted its focus on Day 2 to practical real-world scenarios, change delivery and case studies.

This three-day event, last held in 2019, is the largest ocean technology trade show & conference in the US. As Event Director David Ince commented: “To meet the future challenges we need a mix of the awe inspiring future technologies that are in evidence throughout the show floor here today, along with proven present and near future technologies. We had this firmly in mind when we planned today’s conference content to answer a commonly heard question: What can we be doing now, to raise our game in exploring, protecting and sustainably operating in the world’s oceans and waterways?”

Brad Ack Executive Director and Chief Innovation Officer, Ocean Visions spoke during this morning’s lively session- Delivering Net Zero: Offshore renewable energy and ocean carbon sequestration.  Ocean Visions is advancing a new agenda for the ocean, focused on directly addressing the greatest cause of harm – greenhouse gas pollution that is driving existential threats to the ocean. “What we need is a new DARPA to generate actual solutions to the problem. Not more information that we can ignore.”

In this afternoon’s session- End-use Case Studies in Understanding, Managing and Protecting the Coastal Marine Environment, Cody Warner, Director of Sales & Marketing for Deep Trekker used examples of real world implementations to show how small platform inspection class ROVs can offer rapid deployment and quick answers. Cody believes in hands-on research and adaptation, and has led countless field inspections within aquaculture, energy, defense, infrastructure, search and recovery, and more. Each of these missions has inspired new products, custom addons, and upgrades to existing software or integrations to better suit the work requirements of each industry. Constantly seeking to learn about new trends and applications, Cody is dedicated to testing new technologies to serve the needs of these critical industries.

Tomorrow’s final day of the conference will look further into the future solutions, mindset changes and suitable upskilling we will need to transform the ocean technology space over the next decade and beyond.

In The Ocean Decade: Delivering the science, technology and skills for the future, NOAA’s Assistant Administrator Nicole LeBoeuf will join four other female ocean thought leaders to discuss how informing sustainable use of the ocean and ocean resources will depend on foundational science, technology innovation and the availability of a suitably trained workforce. This Ocean Futures session features debate between senior representatives of research organizations and industry concerning co-design and co-delivery of the transformative science, innovation and skills that will be needed to unlock the future New Blue Economy. It is also set to explore how the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development can provide a global convening framework to bring together diverse stakeholders to achieve the collective vision of the ocean we want by 2030.

Oceanology International Americas runs until 16 February 2023.
